Friends, there’s a new hat in town. Yes, it may have gotten above 80-degrees Farenheit here in NYC yesterday, but you can never have enough hats. Plus, their small size makes them more pleasant to knit when the temps rise. Be like the squirrel burying nuts and make lots of hats that you’ll be thrilled to have when the weather gets chilly.
Meet Pomme de Mer!
What started as a little joke about the hat (pom de mer - pompom of the sea) turned out to be the perfect name for this hat once properly translated into French. Pomme de mer is “sea urchin”, and the slip-stitch pattern on this hat is highly reminiscent (to me, anyway) of the texture of a sea urchin shell. By using a DK-weight yarn, you’ll have a hat that can be worn three seasons out of four.

And I love this hat so much that I had a hard time handing it over to my photographer when it came time for the shoot (and then I missed it while it was being photographed). Which probably means I should make one or two more…
The hat only needs about 150 yards of DK yarn (if you’ve got a full skein of yarn, you could make a pompom with the rest!), and I used a US 5 needle to get 20 sts over 4 inches - of course your gauge may vary (I’m a bit of a loose knitter FYI). The gauge stitch is the slip-stitch in the pattern, but it’s close enough to stockinette for our purposes that, if you get about five stitches to the inch with your intended yarn, you should be on target. And if you want your pompom to be removable, you’ll need a 1/2-inch button - more on that in the pattern.

I hope May 2021 is off to a good start for you. I got my second vax this week (and a week into hot flash treatment was finally able to sleep through the night - huzzah!), so I am a happy woman. I just finished a sweater that needs buttons and am between projects, so tell me what you’re working on using the button below - I need some inspiration :) Until next time…
Happy knitting!
