You may not know it, but mittens are a surprisingly quick knit. Plain stockinette ones just fly off the needles in heavier weight yarns. The great thing about today’s pattern, Holly Berry Mittens, is that you get a plain mitten pattern plus a lace mitten, and then you get to bring them together with some clever i-cord before tying them with an optional bow. This pattern uses two yarns but only one needle, one that’s a little small for the worsted weight liner (making for a denser fabric) and that’s just right for turning a thinner yarn into glorious lace. Holly Berry Mittens patterns was another Red Scarf Project contribution - note that Bare Naked Wools changes the composition and dyer of its Festivus yarn every year, though it knits up at the same gauge.
This pattern is a little bit ambitious - provisional cast-on, two different lace patterns (written and charted), i-cord bind-off - great techniques to add to your repertoire. But it’s a small, portable project with a beautiful end product that will have you longing for a chilly day to show them off.
Today only get half off Holly Berry Mittens with code ADVENT2021. See you tomorrow…
Happy knitting!
xxoo, Kathleen
