Hi, I’m Kathleen Dames, and this is The Knit. It’s completely free to access and read, but if you would like to support my work, please consider a paid newsletter subscription for $5 per month or $50 annually. Thank you! Your support helps me create more knitting patterns and fun content ad-free. Thank you so much.
I’m frontloading the Advent list with smaller projects that you might be able to complete in time for Christmas, like the Snow Squall Scarf: worsted weight yarn and colorwork in the round for quick and warm, plus giant pompoms to make you smile and remind you to get in a snowball fight.
This design was originally part of the Bare Naked Wools Red Scarf Project, an annual charity fundraiser for kids who have aged out of the foster care system. Why not go buy some Festivus yarn to make one of these cozy scarves this year? It looks like there are some lovely patterns over at the Red Scarf Project (and scroll down for the yarn), but you’re going to knit a Snow Squall Scarf, right? Hehe!
By beginning with the basic lice pattern, you will get comfortable with colorwork and get to know your yarn. Then, when you’re getting a little more confident (or bored), it’s time for bigger and bigger snowflakes. I’ve also provided alternative directions, just in case you need big snowflakes at both ends (not everyone likes asymmetrical things). Everything gets topped off with two jumbo pompoms that always make me think of snowball fights. This is another design with minimal finishing work, so you will get lots of knitting joy.

Happy knitting!
