Hi, I’m Kathleen Dames, and this is The Knit. It’s completely free to access and read, but if you would like to support my work, please consider a paid newsletter subscription for $5 per month or $50 annually. Thank you! Your support helps me create more knitting patterns and fun content ad-free. Thank you so much.
Today’s category: cowls
While I have a few cowls in my shops, I chose Enwreathed for today’s pattern because it comes with a pullover (!), and I do love giving you a twofer pattern. The cowl is a great piece on its own but also a very helpful swatch for the pullover. In my stranded color knitting experience, I have found that small swatches are even more deceptive than your regular swatch, plus I always prefer making a *thing* to just swatching. With a cowl there’s not much pressure for it to be an exact size, so even if you end up needing to knit three, they’ll come in pretty handy for someone to keep their neck warm.
The colorwork pattern for Enwreathed is a beautiful stylized flowering vine (with some pine boughs on the yoke of the pullover) - a stitch pattern I have always found so pretty and unusual. I knit my cowl and pullover in Biches et Buches fingering weight yarn, which I love - it’s warm and cozy yet light and airy. Of course any fingering weight yarn will do, provided you achieve gauge, and that’s where the cowl comes in.
Just a reminder that you will receive access to both patterns with purchase. By using coupon code ADVENT2021 in either of my shops you will get Enwreathed Cowl and Pullover patterns ($14 value) for $4. Holiday madness has clearly set in chez Dames ;)
We’re down to just a handful of patterns left, so I can’t wait to see what tomorrow will bring. Until then…
xxoo, Kathleen
P.S. I started a season of my podcast The Sweater that covered Enwreathed a few years back. Unfortunately due to rampant, very loud construction on my building (followed by the pandemic and then a year of loud roadwork to fix a flaming utility hole - it’s been fun), I was only able to record seven episodes, but they’re all full of tips and tricks for successful colorwork knitting (and you get to see and hear me). Find all the video episodes on my YouTube channel and visit here for the audio-only version on iTunes (I talk a lot, so it does work without the visuals, if that’s how you roll).
