The Knit No. 15 | Colonel Brandon
Did November creep up on you? I feel a bit like a broken record saying “time is a construct” but really, it is. Why, just five minutes ago I was swimming in a cove in Maine. Sigh. I wish. That was months ago. Anyway, time flies, and today I have a new pattern release for you that is also an old pattern…
Colonel Brandon, originally published in Jane Austen Knits 2015, is one of those patterns I wrote and knit in a tizzy, and only now am I really appreciating (I’m wearing it as I type because it’s finally chilly here in NYC). Technically, I designed it as a mens sweater, but as you can see it’s really unisex and looks good on the ladies, too. The cables are unusual, the woolen-spun yarn is light yet cozy, and the hybrid yoke construction (from our knitting godmother, Elizabeth Zimmermann) makes for a knit that keeps your attention while forming the shoulders of your sweater.
I’ve always described a hybrid yoke with cables as “knitting sudoku”. You’ve got your various cables going, then you have to do the shaping to decrease away stitches in various spots to turn three tubes into the top of a sweater. Seriously, describing it, I want to go knit one right now! It’s very fun and a good workout for your brain. I’ve also used this construction on An Aran for Frederick and An Aran for Anne, so if this cable situation isn’t quite doing it for you, check those out (all links are to Payhip, but you can access my Ravelry shop using the button below).
In other news I had a lovely time at Rhinebeck. Saw lots of people. Bought very little yarn. Enjoyed being a civilian. Next time I hope to have the companion sweater to Colonel Brandon ready for you: Marianne Cardigan - a very different kind of sweater, but one that should be in the pattern shop.
Until then, happy knitting!
xxoo, Kathleen
